How JHP Works. An Honest Explanation...

Do we use subcontractors?

Yes, we do.

Just Home Projects operates with a small core team and works alongside a trusted network of specialist subcontractors to deliver different elements of our home improvement projects.

For some homeowners, that's completely normal and in reality, it's how most home improvement companies work

For others, the word subcontractor can immediately raise questions.

- Who are these people?

- How do I know they're any good?

- Who's actually responsible for my project?

- Wouldn't I be better choosing a company that employs everyone directly?

They're perfectly reasonable questions.

So rather than pretend our way of working is perfect, or your only option, we'd rather explain exactly how it works, the benefits, the potential downsides, and why we've deliberately chosen this model.

Firstly, Why Don't We Employ Every Trade Ourselves?

Because we don't believe being on our payroll automatically makes somebody the best person for your project.

A typical home improvement project might require sever different trades - carpenters, electricians, plumbers, plasterers, decorators, tilers and other specialists.

Rather than maintaining a large permanent workforce, we work with carefully selected specialists who are extremely good at their particular trade.

Many of these are people we've developed long-standing working relationships with.

They're not simply names we've found online when we've needed someone.

We know their workmanship. We know how they communicate. We know whether they turn up when they say they will. And, importantly, we know whether we'd be comfortable having them working in our own homes.

That last test is the most important one.

What Are the Benefits?

There are several.

1. The Right Specialist for the Right Job

We're not restricted to whoever happens to be employed by us.

Instead, we can assemble a team around the requirements of an individual project.

A great electrician is rarely a great carpenter. A fantastic bathroom fitter is probably not the person we'd choose to build bespoke cabinetry.

Specialist work deserves specialist people.

2. We've Already Done the Vetting

Finding a good tradesperson isn't particularly difficult.

Finding consistently good tradespeople who are reliable, professional, appropriately qualified where required, respectful of customers' homes and capable of working effectively alongside other trades is considerably harder.

We've spent years developing those relationships.

That means our customers don't have to start from scratch finding, checking and coordinating multiple individual contractors themselves.

3. Established Relationships Matter

Because we provide our trade partners with regular work, we're a very important customer to them too.

That gives us advantages around availability, continuity and commercial pricing that aren't necessarily available to somebody approaching them for a single job.

More importantly, there's accountability.

They know the standards we expect because we've worked together before.

And Are There Are Any Downsides?

Absolutely.

And we'd be suspicious of anyone suggesting otherwise.

A company with a large directly employed workforce can have greater day-to-day control over exactly where its employees are and when they're available.

With subcontractors, we're working with independent businesses. Occasionally, circumstances on another project can affect availability. An emergency can happen. Schedules sometimes have to change.

There's also an additional management responsibility.

When several independent specialists are involved, somebody needs to make sure the electrician arrives after the appropriate first-fix work but before something else gets closed up, for example.

That's where the quality of the company managing the project becomes incredibly important.

Our model wouldn't work particularly well without strong project management, communication and long-established relationships.

That's why we don't pretend that simply "using subcontractors" is an advantage.

Using the right subcontractors, within a properly managed system, is.

Wouldn't I Have More Protection With a Bigger Company?

Maybe, but not necessarily.

Size and professionalism aren't the same thing.

We're deliberately a relatively small business, but we don't operate casually.

Behind every project are the processes you'd expect from a professional home improvement company: appropriate insurance, written quotations, documented payments, project planning, client communication, quality control and clear accountability.

We believe there can actually be an advantage to remaining relatively small.

You're not disappearing into a large organisation.

Our reputation matters enormously to us, and the people responsible for running the business remain closely connected to the projects carrying our name.

Who's Responsible If Something Goes Wrong?

We are.

This is perhaps the most important point in this entire article.

When you appoint Just Home Projects to manage and deliver your project, we don't expect you to manage the individual trades on our behalf.

If there's a problem with something one of our appointed specialists has done, we won't simply tell you:

"You'll need to speak to the subcontractor."

You appointed us.

It's our responsibility to deal with it and that's what we'll do.

That's one of the fundamental differences between appointing several individual trades yourself and appointing a company to take responsibility for delivering the overall project.

Couldn't I Just Go Direct to Your Tradespeople and Save Money?

You could certainly appoint individual tradespeople yourself.

But it's important to understand what you'd be comparing.

You're not paying Just Home Projects simply to introduce you to an electrician, carpenter or plasterer.

You're appointing us to put together the appropriate team, coordinate the project, manage the sequence of work, communicate with everyone involved, oversee standards and take responsibility for the finished result.

There isn't necessarily a saving from going direct either.

Because of the volume of work and long-term relationships we've developed with our trade partners, we get preferential commercial pricing and availability.

But even where somebody could save money by managing everything themselves, the comparison shouldn't simply be:

"What does the individual tradesperson charge?"

It should be:

"Who is taking responsibility for making the entire project work?"

Those are two very different services.

Would a Company With Everything In-House Be Better for Me?

Possibly, only you can decide.

We're not going to tell you that our model is right for everybody.

If having every person working on your home directly employed by the same company is particularly important to you, there are businesses structured that way and one of them may suit you better.

Equally, employing everyone directly doesn't automatically guarantee better workmanship, communication or project management.

Ultimately, we think there are more important questions to ask:

- Who will actually be working in my home?

- How have they been selected?

- Who manages them?

- Who checks the quality?

And, above all, who takes responsibility when something doesn't go according to plan?

Those are questions we'd encourage you to ask us — and any other home improvement company you're considering.

The Just Home Projects Approach

We've deliberately chosen to remain a relatively lean business supported by a network of trusted specialists.

It gives us flexibility, access to excellent tradespeople and the ability to put together the right team for each project.

But the model only works because of what sits behind it: strong relationships, careful selection, professional systems, proper project management and clear accountability.

We don't expect you to trust somebody simply because we call them a "trusted partner".

We expect to earn that trust through the way your entire project is handled.

And if our approach isn't right for you, that's absolutely fine.

Our purpose is simple:

To help homeowners make confident home improvement decisions — whether you ultimately choose Just Home Projects or somebody else.
